Geneva and Iris found a crowd of about a hundred people all huddled together, some holding candles that illuminated their perplexed faces, others clutching tightly to a guitar or mandolin. Although many were in their forties or fifties, Geneva was surprised to see that even more were college-aged and wore t-shirts or sweatshirts displaying the band in its prime. A ghostly young woman with long bangs and thick-rimmed glasses, who wore a green velvet hoodie that gave her the appearance of a Lord of the Rings elf, stood quietly to one side murmuring what sounded like a prayer that she was reading from her phone. A raven-haired woman in her mid-forties with tightly drawn skin stood uneasily next to her, her nose turned up at the outpouring of emotion that surrounded her.

“How much longer are we going to stay, Emma?” the woman asked. “I didn’t plan to be out this late.”

“We’ll go in a few minutes, Mother,” said the girl Emma. “You didn’t hear me complaining the other week when we spent over an hour at the farmer’s market.”

“Yes, well, you know my personal feelings about Estelle Landliner,” her mother replied in a low voice. “I suppose she’s going to become a martyr now, but you’ve seen how she treated me. I can’t believe you even talked me into coming out here.”

“People live complicated lives,” said Emma, who sounded as though she, too, was regretting having brought her along. “I can’t help the fact that her music has meant a great deal to me.”

Geneva, who had been staring over the heads of the crowd attempting to locate George, who had announced that he was walking over to meet them, listened with interest to this intriguing conversation. She wanted to ask the woman how she had known Estelle, but before she had the chance, Iris said, “I remember when Lennon died, it was like this. People gathered in the parks, just openly weeping.”

“She still had a lot of life left in her,” came a voice at their elbows, and Geneva turned to see a man of about twenty or twenty-one, standing just a hair above six feet, wearing a well-pressed blue Polo shirt and a pair of dark dress pants. He stared solemnly past them as he added, “I hope no one from the band makes the mistake of showing up here tonight. A lot of us blame them for derailing her life.”

“But it was her choice to leave the band, as I understand,” said Iris. “At least, that was what she always said when asked about it.”

“She was being polite, undoubtedly,” the young man said. “Who voluntarily leaves one of the biggest bands in the world at the peak of their fame? Nobody. I don’t think Roz intended to spend her final years working in some sweaty, two-penny jewelry store. She was better than that. She had real dreams for her life.”

“By all accounts, she was happy enough,” said Geneva, though she couldn’t help remembering Melissa’s lurid story of screaming fights in the middle of the night.
